“The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant-Special Needs Programme”, supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, emphasises the holistic development of special needs students, helping them to establish a positive and healthy lifestyle and increase their resilience and social adaptability. The Special Needs Programme is taken to schools in LEAP’s specially designed mobile classroom equipped with state-of-the-art technology as well as a hydraulic hoist to enable wheelchair access. LEAP was the first drug prevention education organization in Hong Kong to apply Augmented Reality (AR) and Kinect technologies to its educational programmes, allowing even special needs students to enjoy an exceptional learning experience combining technology, fun and knowledge. Currently, the Special Needs Programme is delivered only in Chinese. The programme can also be conducted in a school classroom.
Catering to the needs of students with mild, moderate or severe intellectual or physical disabilities, the 23-unit programme comprises six themes: personal hygiene and self-care, body knowledge, drug information, emotional knowledge, social skills, and independent living skills. The programmes are fun and interactive when students can learn important health messages and social competency skills through simple games and activities. Students participate in a 45-minute or 1-hour session each year. At the end of each session, a CD-Rom will be given to the accompanying teacher to facilitate follow-up activities in the classroom.
