Year 7 Programme “Clearing up Myths about Smoking”

 

 

The 5 main characters are preparing a group project on the effects of smoking. Students will learn about the adverse effects of cigarettes and analyze common myths about tobacco products with critical thinking skills. During the programme, the characters are challenged by peer pressure as someone takes out a pack of cigarettes. Students will explore and practice different refusal skills through discussions and role play activities, aiming to enhance their confidence when they encounter inappropriate requests.

 

Programme curriculum:

Understand the health effects of smoking

- Understand the adverse effects of smoking and passive smoking

- Correct commonly believed myths about smoking and other tobacco products (including e-cigarettes)

Understand the marketing strategies of tobacco companies

- Discuss the marketing strategies of tobacco companies and their motives

- Analyse information with critical thinking skills

Explore reasons why adolescents choose to smoke

- Comprehend the source and impact of peer pressure

- Explore the factors affecting the choice of smoking

Develop problem solving skills

- Equip students with necessary skills to make responsible decisions

- Enhance students’ coping skills under challenging conditions

Develop refusal skills

- Learn effective refusal strategies while maintaining friendship
