LEAP Flag Day 2009

LEAP’s Flag Day, held in the New Territories Region on 18 July, 2009, raised some HK$320,000. The early school closure due to the outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) caused us difficulty in receiving volunteers, but we were encouraged by the participation of 850 volunteers from schools, community centres and the general public.

A publicity campaign including appeal letters and posters in the MTR Stations and housing estates had been mounted in advance to generate awareness of the event. Mr. Andy Lau, LEAP’s health ambassador, supported us in our promotion. Despite the hot weather, quite a number of the volunteers were children under the age of 14, accompanied by their parents. This was an excellent parent-child activity, introducing to children the idea of supporting a charity from a young age.

To thank them for the support, awards were presented to the groups that provided the highest number of volunteers. They are:

Outstanding Participation (Group):

Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of MFBM

Certificate of Merit (Group):

Lok Sin Tong Leung Kau Kui Primary School
The Church of Christ in China Kei Wai Primary School
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Yuen Long (Ping Shan) Inhabitants Association

All the volunteers and the supporters received a certificate signed by LEAP’s Health Ambassador, Mr. Andy Lau.
